Dr. Yifei Cui is currently a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Dr. Cui received his BEng from Hong Kong Polytechnic University in the year of 2009 and then processed to graduate study in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta. He received his MSc (Thesis-based) in geotechnical engineering in 2012 and Ph.D. in geotechnical engineering in 2016.

Dr. Cui’s research focuses on the behavior of soils and rocks under complex conditions involving mechanical and hydraulic coupled processes. Dr. Cui’s research areas include but not limited to:

1. Numerical development of solid and fluid flow coupling method by consideration of pore pressure effect

2. Improvement of solid and fluid flow coupling method using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Lattice Boltzmann Methods (LBM)

3. Experimental and numerical analysis of fine particle migration mechanism under rainfall infiltration process in slope engineering

4. Experimental and numerical analysis of sand production in petroleum engineering

5. Mechanism of vibrational fluidization of granular material in earthquake engineering

6. Risk Assessment using Geographic Information System (GIS) for natural hazards

7. New techniques of dynamic-process based risk analysis and management
